A Message from Mayor Stimpson - November 24

Nov 24th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 7 p.m. on Tuesday November 24, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 19,548 COVID-19 cases, which is an increase of 145 cases. To review the most recent detailed reports from MCHD, click here.

During the coming weeks, our teams of contractors will be continuing to pick up the remaining debris from hurricanes Sally and Zeta. However, our public works employees will be transitioning back to a regular trash collection schedule beginning Monday, November 30.

To help residents get back into their old routines, we will not be issuing any tickets for non-compliance with our trash and garbage ordinances during the first two-week period and will issue written warnings instead. I encourage you to review our trash collection rules and schedule on the City's website. As a reminder, the make-up day for trash collection on Thanksgiving Day will be Saturday, November 28.

I am excited to announce we have finished repairs to the fencing at Medal of Honor Park's dog park. Downed trees and damage sustained during Hurricane Sally left the large dog area closed for several weeks, but after some final touches, we anticipate reopening the park for dogs big and small Wednesday.

This afternoon, I had the opportunity to meet a nice young man from our community who is building up quite a following YouTube and Instagram. Luke Tanner is only four years old, but he has already gained more than 1,400 followers on his YouTube channel, lukesplaylab. The channel follows Luke as he performs experiments in science, arts and crafts and explores the world around him.

This month, Luke has been showcasing the things he's thankful for on Instagram. He stopped by my office for a quick conversation and a photograph with me and some members of our staff. Luke says he's thankful for our elected leaders and might even want to be the mayor himself one day.

"Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances..." When Paul delivered the Thessalonians with these final instructions, it was probably a very high hurdle for them to cross, just as it is for us. Obeying these commands is not natural, but when we follow them, we see people and circumstances differently. This is why Sarah Young in her devotional says that thankfulness takes the sting out of adversity which is why God instructed us to give thanks for everything.

"There is an element of mystery in this transaction. This is a spiritual act of obedience - at times, blind obedience. Those who obey Me in this way are invariably blessed, even though difficulties may remain.  Thankfulness opens your heart to God's presence and your mind to his thoughts. You may be in the same place, with the same set of circumstances, but it is as if a light has been switched on, enabling you to see from his perspective."

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, please join me in a renewed effort to follow these timeless, life changing instructions.

Sleep tight,

Mayor Sandy Stimpson
