A Message from Mayor Stimpson - November 13

Good evening,
It is 7 p.m. on Friday Nov. 13, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 18,428 COVID-19 cases, which is an increase of 109 cases. To review the most recent detailed reports from MCHD, click here.
The City Public Works team and our contractors continue to make great progress on collection of all remaining debris from hurricanes Sally and Zeta. To date, they have collected over 675,000 cubic yards of debris.
Currently all of our resources and a majority of our contractor's resources are working South of Airport Boulevard. A deliberate second pass of debris and trash collection has recently been done North of Airport Boulevard. Once debris removal is complete in the Southern part of the City, normal trash pickup should resume on Monday, November 23 as posted on the City of Mobile’s website. Please continue to place your trash out according to your scheduled day.
This morning I stopped by the Junior League of Mobile's annual Christmas Jubilee. This three-day event at the Mobile Convention Center is the primary fundraiser for the Junior League and supports the wonderful work its members do in our community. It's also a great way to get an early start on your holiday shopping. If you have time over the weekend, stop by and see for yourself.
Today I also visited with some of our public works team who are finishing the concrete repairs in Bienville Square Park. Having safely removed trees that were damaged during Hurricane Sally, the concrete work around the fountain is one of the last things we'll need to complete before reopening the park. We're hopeful we'll be able to remove the barricades around Bienville Square early next week.
Tonight, I'm excited to announce that one of our favorite holiday traditions at the City of Mobile, the Lighting of the Christmas Tree, has been scheduled for next Friday, November 20 in Mardi Gras Park. The lighting of the tree will start promptly at 6 p.m. and there will also be Grab N' Go Craft Bags for kids.
After the event, I would encourage you and your family to head over to Streets Alive in the entertainment district. Who knows? You might even catch a glimpse of Santa rollin' thru Downtown Mobile.
In closing, let's think for a moment how we address problems and challenges. Typically, we all turn to God as a last resort when all other efforts have fallen short. The verse found in John 7:37 tells us there is another way. "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink."
The message from today's God Calling explains, "Come unto Me" means go to God for the solution to every problem, for the calming of every fear, for all your needs - physical, mental, spiritual. If you are sick come to Me for health; if you are homeless come to Me for a home; if you are friendless come to Me for a friend; if things seem hopeless come to Me for refuge. "Come unto Me" for everything!
As we go into tomorrow and the days ahead, let's make an effort to reverse how we typically address our challenges. Pray first rather than as a last resort.
