A Message from Mayor Stimpson - November 12

Nov 12th, 2020

Good evening,

It is 7 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 12, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 18,338 COVID-19 cases, which is an increase of 139 cases. To review the most recent detailed reports from MCHD, click here

With COVID-19 cases rising around the country, let's be reminded that proper safety measures can make all the difference in the transmittal of this disease. Let's be vigilant with wearing our masks, social distancing and good hygiene.

We anticipate debris clean-up from hurricanes Sally and Zeta to continue throughout the month, and we're still asking that residents put out any new debris or trash on their regularly scheduled trash pick-up days. The City's drop-off sites for bagged debris at Langan Municipal Park and the James Seals Community Center will also remain open until our debris removal efforts have been completed.

I don't know if you heard, but Mobile is going to go Bananas next spring...at least for a day. We were excited to announce yesterday that the Savannah Bananas are bringing their "One City World Tour" to Mobile on March 26, 2021. We were among hundreds of locations across the country considered to host this event, but given our City's deep ties to baseball history, I imagine the choice was an easy one.

If you aren't familiar with the Bananas, the closest comparison would probably be the Harlem Globetrotters. Their events are part baseball game, part show and part circus. I hope to see some of you there for the spectacle when they take the field at Hank Aaron Stadium next March.

This morning I had the pleasure of walking through Trimmier Park with some members of our team as well as City Councilman C.J. Small and Mobile County Superintendent Chresal Threadgill. We're excited to be planning upgrades at Trimmier thanks to the city's 2019 surplus. As you may know, Trimmier Park is in Councilman Small's district and is regularly used by the B.C. Rain Red Raiders. We walked the park this morning to get a first-hand look together and discuss ways we can improve it to benefit everyone.

Today the City of Mobile also officially activated a new street level pedestrian crosswalk on Water Street near the Meridian at the Port apartment complex. To some people, a new crosswalk might not be that noteworthy, but we see it as a sign of the continuing residential growth in downtown Mobile. Whether you're driving, walking or cycling, please remember to keep an eye out when traveling on Water Street.

This morning, a footnote to Psalm 39: 4-5 caught my eye. It reads, "It is ironic that people spend so much time securing their lives on earth and spend little or no thought about where they will spend eternity. Life is short. If there is something important you want to do, you must not put it off - tell someone you love them; deal with undisciplined areas of your life; tell someone about your walk of faith."

I'll leave you with one of my favorite quotes, "The opportunity of a lifetime must be seized during the lifetime of the opportunity."

Sleep tight!
