A Message from Mayor Stimpson - November 10
Nov 10th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 10, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 18,104 COVID-19 cases, which is an increase of 191 cases. To review the most recent detailed report, click here.
Our crews are still working seven days a week cleaning up debris from hurricanes Sally and Zeta. We currently expect to continue this work throughout November, and we're still asking that residents put out any new debris or trash on their regularly scheduled trash pick-up days. The City's drop-off sites for bagged debris at Langan Municipal Park and the James Seals Community Center are still open as well.
In addition to the debris left by hurricanes Sally and Zeta, 144 City of Mobile buildings were damaged during the storms resulting in 284 separate repairs. Those ranged from small repairs of shingles to larger projects like the complete re-roofing of the History Museum of Mobile. We're continuing to make progress on repairing these damages, and I'd like to thank the City departments leading those efforts.
Earlier today the Mobile City Council approved an agreement with the Mobile County Commission for an extension of Nevius Road. This project will have a lot of positive impacts for the City of Mobile and the county including relieving traffic congestion along Sollie Road and Hillcrest Road. It will also provide direct access to hundreds of undeveloped acres of land within the city limits.
This roughly $5 million project is being led by the county using $1.5 million in surplus funding from the City of Mobile. This extension of Nevius Road is a great opportunity to open up new areas of the city for potential development and help grow Mobile within its own borders. I'd like to thank the City Council for its support and the Mobile County Commission for continuing to be a great partner on this project and all Pay-As-You-Go projects.
This morning I read a devotional that reminded me life's difficulties and troubles aren't intended to stop us, but to make us redouble our efforts. That selection from "God Calling" reads: "Nothing must daunt you. Do not let difficulties, big or small, conquer you. [God's] Strength is awaiting you. Bring all your thought, all your power, into action. Rise to conquer even the small difficulties before they become big troubles. There can be no failure with [Him]."
As we near the end of a year that has been full of new challenges, it was nice to be reminded that the difficulties we face are often what make us into our best selves. When we wake up tomorrow, there will no doubt be new obstacles waiting on us. Big or small, let's rise to meet them.
Sleep tight!
