A Message from Mayor Stimpson - June 8

Good evening,

It is 9 p.m. on Monday, June 8, and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile’s efforts regarding COVID-19.

As of tonight, there have been 2,479 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 31,028 total tests. There were 28 new patients with active COVID-19 as of this morning.

There are 124 deaths attributed to the virus, with just 5 total deaths last week. That’s the lowest number for any week since the last week of March.

Alabama Department of Public Health statistics show 95% of the deaths in Alabama were among those with preexisting conditions, the most common being cardiovascular disease.

Please remember that COVID-19 is still active in our community and we all must continue the recommended safety guidelines:

  • Keep a safe distance of at least 6 feet from others
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Wear a mask when shopping or when in public places.

The state’s amended Safer at Home order remains in place, which applies to any gathering of people in group settings. In those cases, please keep a safe distance and use a face covering.

The Mobile Housing Authority disclosed testing results today for Central Plaza Towers, a senior living facility that experienced an outbreak of COVID-19 last month. The results showed that, out of 349 total tests, just one tested positive. These tests included 306 residents and 43 employees, with 18 residents remaining to be tested.

These results are good news and we are grateful for the leadership shown by Michael Pierce, the Executive Director of the Housing Authority, for working quickly with the city and Franklin Primary Health to complete the testing.

In partnership with USA Health, the city has relocated the COVID testing site from Ladd-Peebles Stadium to the Mobile Civic Center. This step was taken to allow testing to continue safely in severe weather conditions.

I hope that you made it safely through Tropical Storm Cristobal, which continues to cause heavy rain across the Mobile area. The city experienced some downed trees and isolated flooding, but no major damage. Please continue to be careful and avoid driving through standing water if possible.

COVID-19 has been overshadowed in recent days by coverage of the storm and attention to the protests taking place in Mobile and across America following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The City is working harder than ever to deal with these multiple issues, and I want to commend our team for the job they’ve done in managing these unprecedented challenges.

Please remember that, despite these concerns, Coronavirus is still a very real threat to our community and we must continue to take it seriously.

Sincerely,

Sandy
