Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As of tonight, there have been 7,759 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, an increase of 196 cases. According to the Mobile County Health Department, a total of 188 patients have died due to COVID-19. For a detailed look at today's data click here .
Gov. Ivey and the Alabama Department of Health announced today the Safer at Home Order has been extended through August 31st, 2020. This includes the extension of the face covering requirement.Click here to view the order.
Remember we can all do our part today. Together we can prevent an increase in COVID cases by following these simple steps to stay safe:
- Wear a mask when in public
- Keep your hands clean
- Avoid crowds and keep a safe distance from others
- Stay home if you are sick
The City of Mobile's momentum continues. Here are a few updates:
- Today, I attended the groundbreaking of the Advanced Manufacturing Center at Bishop State Community College. This is $21 million project that will educate our workforce for our diverse and growing industries.
- On a conference call today, I spoke with the Department of Transportation Acting Under Secretary, Joel Szabat, FMC Commissioners Lou Sola and Rebecca Dye and Carnival Cruise CEO Christine Duffy concerning the economic impact of COVID-19 on the cruise industry. Our cruise ship brings more than $6 million in revenue to our City. I was honored to be chosen as the only Mayor to discuss our Port City.
- Lastly, I met with a team of interns known as "The Mayor's Squad." Typically, we have more than 150 young people in and around our offices. Due to COVID-19, many of them worked remotely. Nevertheless, these students have worked together over the last month, meeting through Zoom, to complete a survey targeting their generation's needs, wants and thoughts about the City of Mobile. I look forward to seeing the impact this generation has on Mobile. I am inspired by their drive to accomplish change! They are asking the tough, yet necessary questions that are critical to the continued momentum of our City.
Tonight, I am thankful for a busy day! A day that felt like a true "new normal." A day with many accomplishments and a lot of promise and hope for a better tomorrow!
