A Message from Mayor Stimpson - July 28
Jul 28th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As of tonight, there have been 7,577 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, an increase of 130 cases. According to the Mobile County Health Department, a total of 184 patients have died due to COVID-19. This is one patient more than yesterday. For a detailed look at today's data click here .
At the end of this week, the face covering ordinances issued by the city and state will sunset. We expect Gov. Ivey and the Alabama Department of Health will provide guidance on whether to extend the state ordinance in the coming days. Remember we can all do our part today. Together we can prevent an increase in COVID cases by following these simple steps to stay safe:
- Wear a mask when in public
- Keep your hands clean
- Avoid crowds and keep a safe distance from others
- Stay home if you are sick
The City of Mobile's momentum continues. Here are a few updates:
- The $5 million 2020 Resurfacing Program began last week at three locations: the Gulf Manor subdivision, Brawood, Dalewood, and Springwood Neighborhoods. This work will happen over the next twelve months.
- Sidewalk contractors continue to make repairs throughout the City. Many of the sidewalks are damaged due to age, tree roots, and other causes. This work is being executed by many of our small and disadvantaged businesses (DBE). Our sidewalk program is one of the many ways we are increasing our partnerships with our small and disadvantaged businesses.
- Tonight, I participated in the 2020 Shrink the Divide event. Thank you to the many pastors who have come together to unite our City through the body of Christ. It was a dynamic night to renew our hope. We were all moved by the powerful testimony of Pastor Anthony Thompson, who told the story of how he came to forgive the man who murdered his wife.
Today at City Council meeting, I made mention of a historic milestone. July 26 marked the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Over the past six years, we have worked hard to provide infrastructure work on our sidewalks, streets, parks and buildings. This year we upgraded our website and programs to ensure persons with disabilities received more access to city services. Thank you to our staff members who implemented these improvements.
As I close, my hope is that you remain encouraged and have faith in what lies ahead. Together we will continue this fight.
