A Message from Mayor Stimpson - July 27

Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Monday, July 27 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department released an "expanded report" of data for the week ending July 25. Here are some key takeaways from the report:
- Mobile County recorded a total count of 7,204 laboratory confirmed COVID positive patients, an increase of 1,185 patients from the prior week total of 6,019, a growth rate of 20 percent.
- Mobile County recorded a total of 1,072 hospitalized patients to date, which represents about 15 percent of those confirmed positive with COVID.
- Mobile County has recorded a total count of 181 deceased, representing about 2.5 percent of total confirmed cases
- Mobile County hospitals averaged 179 COVID positive patients per day, an increase of 9 from the prior week average of 170, a growth rate of 5 percent.
- Area hospitals averaged 54 COVID ICU patients, an increase of 14 patients from the prior week average of 40. ICU bed availability averaged 11 percent, with available beds increasing for the first time in the past four weeks.
Today the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board voted today to restrict alcohol sales in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. Alcohol sales will be cut off at 11 p.m. for on-premise sites such as bars or restaurants. Under the emergency order, drinks will have to be off the table by 11:30 p.m. This policy applies statewide until further notice.
The business of the city rolls on despite COVID. A few updates from today:
- This weekend, Mobile hosted the 4th annual "Ballin' on the Bay" youth basketball tournament. This event brought 53 teams and 800 players and coaches from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee to the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center. These teams, representing players from 5th to 11th grades, are part of the Youth Basketball of America association. They took careful steps to protect players and coaches, spacing the games out over six courts and balancing the schedule to limit potential exposure.
- Our team has been working hard to update the City's policies for employees who test positive for COVID. Our goal is to protect the health of our employees as well as the citizens they serve, while at the same time continuing to deliver city services at a high level. Our team has done a great job of adapting to the pandemic and finding innovative ways to fulfill their public duties.
- Mobile lost a dedicated and faithful servant this weekend with the passing of Robert Edington. Robert served with distinction in the U.S. Navy and later in the Alabama Legislature. He was named Mobilian of the Year 2007 and Mobile Area Veteran of the Year in 2012. A community-wide celebration of his life is being planned for November. Meanwhile, our prayers are with Pat and the Edington family.
Tomorrow is City Council meeting day which always brings a full day of activities! We will hit the ground running seeking ways to move Mobile forward.
