A Message from Mayor Stimpson - July 24
Jul 24th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Friday, July 24 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As of tonight, there have been 6,972 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, an increase of 211 since Thursday.
According to the Mobile County Health Department, a total of 177 patients have died due to COVID-19. This is one patient less than what was reported yesterday. We are grateful that of the 6,972 confirmed COVID cases, 42% have recovered. For a detailed look at today's data click here.
As I reflect on this week, I was pleased to see the number of people who are protecting themselves and others by wearing a face covering. Together we can stop the spread of COVID by following these simple steps:
- Wear a mask when in public
- Keep your hands clean
- Avoid crowds and keep a safe distance from others
- Stay home if you are sick
We continue to devote significant time and energy to the fight against COVID-19. Meanwhile, our staff is working hard to move the city forward.
- The City of Mobile recently won a grant from the Historic Preservation Fund of the National Park Service. These funds will be used to hire a contractor to prepare a National Register nomination for the Twelve Mile Island Ships Graveyard and a National Historic Landmark nomination for the Clotilda slave ship. SEARCH, Inc., an archaeology firm specializing in maritime archaeology, was selected to perform the work. We are excited to see the next steps.
- Our future looks bright as our Youth Empowered for Success (YES) participants are getting an experience working with the City of Mobile this summer. More than 100 young people are working in city departments, virtually and remotely.
- The month of July is National Parks and Recreation Month. Three employees from the Mobile Parks and Recreation Department were nationally highlighted as 'Heroes.' Congratulations to Leonard Hawkins of the Mobile Tennis Center, Jerome Leland and Cathy Hawkins from Parks and Recreation. Read more about our Heroes at https://www.nrpa.org/CelebratingYou/ .
- This week the Mobile County Commission officially opened the City's newest soccer complex on Hall Mills Road, This project, which includes two new playing fields and a practice field, is helping to meet a tremendous need for more soccer fields in our community. The County Commission is planning additional phases to include concessions, restrooms and 10 additional fields.
- Remember to keep an eye on the weather. Tropical Storm Gonzalo is still projected to become the Atlantic's first hurricane of 2020. Click here for the latest information from the National Weather Service.
I will close by reminding you of the wise words in Matthew 6:34 - "Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."
I wish you a restful weekend and look forward to re-connecting with you next week.
