A Message from Mayor Stimpson - July 16

Jul 16th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 16 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

As of tonight, there have been 5,570 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, an increase of 163 since Wednesday. Click here to read a detailed report from the Mobile County Health Department.

There have been a couple of major announcements in the past 24 hours related to COVID.

On Wednesday, Gov. Ivey announced a statewide mask requirement. The order applies to anyone when in public settings or in close contact with other people. It is set to expire on July 31, concurrent with the City of Mobile's mask order. Click here to read more about Gov. Ivey's order.

This afternoon, Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Chresal Threadgill announced that he will delay the start of school until Sept. 1, and that students will not return to the classroom for the first nine weeks. Click here to read a message from the Superintendent regarding the start of the school year.

These decisions are difficult but I have full confidence in both Gov. Ivey and Superintendent Threadgill. We are disappointed that school won't begin as scheduled on Aug. 10, but we fully support the Superintendent in making this decision.

COVID is more than just a public health crisis. It is also a threat to working families and to small businesses. Our hope is that, if we all do our part, we will slow the spread of the virus and fewer people will get sick. That will allow schoolchildren to return to class, it will help our businesses rebound and it will speed the recovery process for all of our citizens.

These simple steps will keep us safe:

  • Wear a mask when in public
  • Keep your hands clean
  • Keep a safe distance from others
  • Stay home if you are sick

Tomorrow, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Pete Gaynor will be in Mobile to meet with local and state officials to discuss hurricane preparedness during the COVID-19 response. We will participate in the meeting and share an update with you in tomorrow's email.

We are continuing to work hard for you as we tackle these challenges. Pray that God continues to strengthen our hand to keep us safe from harm, and to help us emerge from these challenges stronger than ever.
