A Message from Mayor Stimpson - January 21

Good evening,

It is 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 31,103 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 180 cases. To review the most recent detailed report, click here.

USA Health has released an online tool that will allow residents to indicate their interest in receiving a COVID-19 vaccination at the Mobile Civic Center as part of its partnership with the City of Mobile.

Those who would like to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the Civic Center can sign up online at https://c19vaccine.southalabama.edu/ It’s important to note that this will only let USA Health know who is interested in receiving a vaccine. It will NOT generate an appointment for vaccination.

Information provided through the online tool will be used to contact those who want the vaccine based on two factors: When eligibility of certain groups is approved by the Alabama Department of Public Health and when USA Health has received enough vaccine to begin giving the shots to those who are eligible.

According to USA Health, in just 24 hours, more than 2,600 people registered for their place in line for COVID-19 vaccination appointments at the Mobile Civic Center. Appointments have been set for nearly half of registrants over the age 75 and nearly all of those who are healthcare workers and first responders.

In a bit of sweet news, Fine and Wine Magazine has named Bake My Day as the best mail-order cookies in the Southeast. The local bakery was featured in an article highlighting some of the best cookies from around the United States that you can have delivered right to your door. Of course, in Mobile, we don’t have to wait for the mail. We can enjoy these treats any time at their location on McGregor Avenue.

This coming Saturday, January 23, the Mobile Public Library is kicking off a series of free drive-in movies in the parking lot of its Ben May Main branch. These screenings are a great opportunity to enjoy family-friendly films in a safe and socially distanced setting. The first movie, The Princess Bride, will start at 6:30 p.m. You can call (251) 340-1458 or email mainref@mplonline.org for more information.

In Leadership Promises for Every Day, author J. Maxwell writes: “nothing speaks to others more loudly than the generosity of a leader.” Effective leaders don’t gather just things for themselves, they do so in order to give to others. The best way to maintain an attitude of generosity, is to make giving our time, attention, talent and resources a habit. No matter what it is, we all have something to contribute.

Sleep tight,
