A Message from Mayor Stimpson - December 7

Dec 7th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 7, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 21,280 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 312 cases. To review MCHD's detailed report, click here. Please note that part of the increase in cases reported today is due to a backlog of 251 positive antigen results being processed over the weekend. These results are from a facility in Mobile and represent tests performed between June and October of 2020.

Last Friday, I was honored to help cut the ribbon at a new location for McKemie Place, which is the only emergency overnight shelter for unaccompanied women in Southwest Alabama. Thanks to their amazing staff and volunteers, guests at McKemie Place find comfort, friendship and spiritual support as they seek to rebound from the challenges life has thrown their way.

Our City is fortunate for people like those involved in this organization who recognize the needs in our community that are going unmet. We are proud to have played a small part in the amazing work McKemie Place has done and are looking forward to continuing that partnership in this new chapter.

Mobile is also fortunate to have citizens who are willing to share their talents with our community. Last month, as we began to prepare for our Lighting of the Christmas Tree event, we contacted local designer Ron Barrett about creating a set of unique ornaments to represent our City.

Ron and his team were able to create several large, handmade ornaments depicting iconic City landmarks like Bienville Square, the Saenger Theatre and the USS Alabama. I really enjoyed them, and I hope you get a chance to as well. They'll be on the Christmas Tree in Mardi Gras Park through the Holiday season.

This morning, as I read through a devotional in "Leadership Promises for Every Day," I was reminded of an Albert Schweitzer saying that is one of my favorites. Schweitzer writes that "Example is not the main thing in influencing others . . . it is the only thing."

"People emulate what they see modeled - positive model, positive response; negative model, negative response. What leaders do, potential leaders around them do. What they value, their people value. If your growth as a leader stops today, your ability to lead will stop along with it. Neither personality nor methodology can substitute for personal growth."

As we start a new week, let us remember that we always have something to learn and room to grow.

Sleep tight,

Mayor Sandy Stimpson
