A Message from Mayor Stimpson - December 4

Dec 4th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 8:40 p.m. on Friday, December 4, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 20,730 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 157 cases. To review MCHD's detailed report, click here.

Due to a rising number of cases, and after receiving guidance from local and state public health officials urging cities not to host parades due to the potential spread of COVID-19, the City of Mobile is delaying the issuance of parade permits for the 2021 Carnival Season until further notice. We are open to revisiting the issuance of parade permits in the future if the present situation changes.

While our celebration may look different next year, Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras, and I believe we are creative enough to observe this important tradition while also protecting the health and safety of Mobilians, our city employees and our frontline healthcare workers.

This morning I had the pleasure of visiting with the team at the Osprey Initiative, who are celebrating four years of cleaning Mobile's waterways. They currently have 12 "Litter Gitters" and perform water-based litter removal three days a week in the Dog River and Three Mile Creek watersheds.

To date, Osprey Initiative has pulled out 44,278 pounds of litter or 24,279 cubic feet of stormwater conveyed litter from our local waters. We have our own litter initiatives at the City of Mobile, but we would not have seen the progress we have to date without partners like Osprey Initiative.

As I started my day, I was reminded of the story of Uzziah, a king of Judah, who started out strong but ended in disgrace. When he started his reign, he had a strong spiritual counselor. When his spiritual counselor died, Uzziah developed a sense of superiority because of his remarkable achievements.

Due to his pride and lack of thankfulness, he failed to recognize God's part in his successes. Eventually, Uzziah defied God and fell from grace. If God has given you wealth, influence, popularity and power, be thankful but be careful. I pray that none of us will get confused and follow the path of Uzziah.

Remember, as long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success. Let's remember to let our successes glorify God, not ourselves.

Sleep tight,

Mayor Sandy Stimpson
