A Message from Mayor Stimpson - December 2
Dec 2nd, 2020
Good evening,
It is 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 20,398 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 200 cases. To review MCHD's detailed report, click here.
Last month, the Mobile City Council approved a $1.7 million allocation as part of a multi-year contract dedicated to installing and repairing sidewalks in several areas of our City. We always include sidewalk repairs and ADA-compliant ramp upgrades as part of our road resurfacing projects, but these dollars have been set aside specifically for sidewalks in our City.
Throughout the first two years of this effort, we have upgraded 313 ADA-compliant curb cuts and installed or repaired 6.6 miles of sidewalks. With additional funding, we are projected to upgrade 420 curb cuts and install or repair another 5 miles of sidewalks over the next year.
This significant sidewalk improvement effort is just one of the many projects our Public Works team oversees each day. Another major initiative they are undertaking with Alabama Power will replace older streetlights with new LED lights over the next year. These brighter, more energy efficient lights will help increase security while also decreasing the City's use of electricity.
Most recently, our teams have been working with Alabama Power crews in the Brookley and Dauphin Island Parkway areas. To date, nearly 4,000 LED lights have been installed, which is roughly 15 percent of the streetlights throughout the City. By the end of 2021, we aim to replace more than 25,000 lights.
Psalm 118 says "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man." The devotional I read this morning cited that verse, but it also reminds readers that, even though we may often find ourselves disappointed in our fellow man, that is nothing compared to God's disappointments in all men. "God Calling" asks us to "remember this and strive to be the friend God sees in His vision of You."
We all are capable of falling short of our best selves from time to time. So, when we find ourselves disappointed in our fellow man, let's work to extend the grace to others God has always extended to us.
Sleep tight,
Mayor Sandy Stimpson
