A Message from Mayor Stimpson - August 27

Good evening,
It is 8 p.m. on Thursday August 27th, 2020 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 12,018 COVID-19 positive cases an increase of 66 cases. The Health Department is reviewing the data to find the cause of this increase. To review the daily report click here.
Monday we will begin construction on the roundabout at Broad St. and Canal St. as part of our Broad Street redevelopment project. Signs and variable message boards will be in place to alert drivers of the closure and alternate routes.
This project will provide safety improvements, reduce speed and allow better access for pedestrians and bicyclists. The roundabout is anticipated to be completed by February 2021.
Today many are facing devastating destruction in the impact of Hurricane Laura. Yesterday we deployed 23 highly trained and specialized urban search and rescue team members as well as one GIS member from the City of Mobile to assist in Louisiana's Hurricane Laura recovery efforts as part of Alabama's Task Force 1.
The team staged in Baton Rouge and moved in where they were needed after landfall. They carry shallow water rescue equipment in addition to everything they need to be completely self-sufficient in the wake of disaster. Further it is comforting to know that Mobile is the home of Alabama Task Force 1. It is the only state recognize and funded asset which can deploy for Type 1 and Type 3 situations. More simply, we can deploy an Urban Search and Rescue Team of either 35 trained personnel or one of 70.
It is an honor to assist our Gulf Coast neighbors in their time of need, as we know they would do the same for us.

In closing, I'm reminded of part of a prayer that I prayed almost every school day for 13 years. "May our words and deeds be such that those who went before will not be ashamed, and those who follow after will find in us an example of truth and courage." Yes, let's hope that be the case as we continue to work together to create a better Mobile, ONE MOBILE.
