A Message from Mayor Stimpson - August 21
Aug 21st, 2020
Good Evening,
It is 8:15 p.m. on Friday, August 21 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As of tonight, the Mobile County Health Department reports an increase of 76 patients from yesterday's report. For a detailed look at today's data click here.
Researchers at Franklin Templeton and Gallup recently teamed up to study "the behavioral response to the COVID-19 pandemic and implications for the recovery." Findings included the following:
- Most Americans believe that people over 55 account for half of all COVID-19 deaths. The actual figure is 92%.
- Americans believe that people under 45 account for 30% of total deaths. The actual figure is 2.7%.
Our goal is to give you the most accurate and current information everyday. We want you to help us prevent the spread of this virus while making the best decisions for you and your loved ones. Local collaborative data provides insight on our challenges and our progress.
Last night, I mentioned the Proposed Fiscal Year 2021 Budget was delivered to the City Council for review. The proposed budget is now available to view on the homepage of the City's website. You can also access the budget by clicking here. Thank you to our Finance team and all departments for your hard work on this document.
The budget process is one example of the partnership approach that allows us to continue our momentum. It is encouraging to see the partnerships that have continued to grow in light of the challenges of this year. The Mobile County Public School System is comprised of approximately 55,000 students. As it became clear that the best option for learning was virtual, the City was on standby to assist our school district.
Our Information Technology (IT) Department partnered with MCPSS as they began the process of mapping internet access. The GIS Department quickly processed data and created a map to show the density of student locations in our area. The map was critical in MCPSS's initial planning and identified some previously unknown concentrations of students within the city limits.
Partnerships produce true progress in our City. Education is a priority and it is inspiring to see collaboration happen in response to the needs of our 21st Century Learners.
In closing, I would like to congratulate Superintendent Chresal Threadgill on being named the District 1 Superintendent of the Year. Under his leadership, I am confident our children will be prepared to lead this City beyond our expectations!
Please remember to monitor the weather as Tropical Storm Laura strengthens. Have a blessed weekend and stay healthy!
