A Message from Mayor Stimpson - August 17
Aug 17th, 2020
It is 9:30 p.m. on Monday, August 17 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As of tonight, the Mobile County Health Department reports a total of 11,230 COVID-19 positive patients, an increase of 54 patients from yesterday's report. There are a total of 235 patients that have died as a result of COVID-19. For a detailed look at today's data click here.
Since enacting the mask ordinance, we continue to see evidence that our efforts to curve the spread of COVID-19 are working. The state has developed a color-coded health guidance system based on rigorous measurements to indicate the risk of spread in each county. Because of our hard work as a community, Mobile County is now designated in the green, or "low risk" category. While the trends in Mobile are encouraging, this virus remains very contagious. We must keep taking important preventative measures to ensure our continued progress.
On a personal note, looking beyond our current environment and finding hope in the future can be tough. Nothing brings hope into perspective quite like a new life. Jean and I were reminded of this while welcoming our 14th grandchild, baby Elizabeth, into the world this weekend.
Speaking of the future, we will be submitting next year's city budget to the City Council on Thursday, August 20th, per requirements of the Zoghby Act. A copy of this budget will also be available for the public to review later this week. As we work to address the immediate needs of our community, we will not allow this pandemic to slow us down. I remain excited about the future of our city and all that is in store for the next year.
Reflecting back over the last several months, I'm grateful for the focus and enduring work of our entire team at the City of Mobile. These talented men and women have not allowed the pandemic to distract them from doing good work on behalf of our citizens. Looking to the future, I'm reminded of Isaiah 43:1 "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine." We may not know what tomorrow will bring. Yet, when we are rooted in faith, we will not be distracted from building a bright future for Mobile.
