Message from Fire Chief Stephen A. Dean

On behalf of the City of Mobile, I would like to thank you for your interest in the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department. The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department was officially organized in 1888 by a handful of residents who wished to address Mobile's fire protection needs, making us one of the oldest fire departments in the United States, rich in history and tradition. Today, our department is staffed with over 450 uniformed men and women who serve 244,376 people living within Mobile's 210 square miles and its jurisdiction.

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department is proud of the service it provides to the community; Mobile's fire, rescue, prevention and emergency medical services are exemplary. Our mission is to provide the highest quality fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to our customers, the citizens of Mobile. Comprehensive training, emergency planning, code enforcement, and innovative safety awareness programs enhance emergency services. Mobile residents can expect and be proud of the excellent service that the Department provides.

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department is a dynamic organization that continues to evolve as new programs and projects are developed to enhance our ability to fulfill our mission. We are ever mindful that the Citizens of the City of Mobile are our customers and that many times we interface with them in situations that, while are routine for us, are quite traumatic for them. We strive individually and collectively as an organization to minimize both the emotional and economic impact of these incidents.

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department is a multi-functional emergency response agency with the responsibility of providing a broad range of emergency services to the community.

Your firefighters and medics are out on the frontline, providing you, your friends, family and loved ones with professional and caring customer service. Your Fire-Rescue Department has been recognized as one of the best departments in the country by the Insurance Services Organization and has been awarded a Class 3 ISO Public Protection Classification Rating. They work hard for Mobile every day. The career of a firefighter and medic is exciting and may sometimes be stressful. It can be very rewarding and also very demanding. The next time you see your firefighters and medics, please take a minute and tell them how much you appreciate their efforts.
